Diet-derived toxins
It obtains alkaloids from ants and other small arthropods; in captivity it may lose much of its toxicity.
Paternal transport
After hatching, the male carries tadpoles and places them in small water deposits where they complete development.

In tiny, nutrient-poor deposits, a larger tadpole may devour a smaller one.
Distribution
In Colombia it is known from Choco and the Uraba region of Antioquia, in the far northwest of the country.
